2 Missing After Plane Crashes Near Oceanside

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) ― One man has been rescued but two others are missing after a small plane crash off the coast of Oceanside.

Authorities say the four-seat Cessna 172 took off Sunday from Montgomery Field in San Diego, flew to Long Beach and was returning when the plane went down about a mile-and-a-half off Oceanside.

U.S. Coast Guard officials say the crash was reported shortly after 5 p.m., and a private boater happened upon the survivor in the water around 6 p.m. The unidentified man was taken to a hospital with a broken leg.

Rescuers were hampered by poor visibility because of thick fog and no obvious wreckage on the ocean's surface.

The downed Cessna is registered to San Diego Flight Training International Inc. Calls seeking comment were not returned Sunday night.
