A man shot and killed by sheriff's deputies early Sunday morning in City Terrace was identified by the coroner's office.
Salvador Zepeda Alarcon, 17, was running east on Folsom Street near Humphreys Avenue when deputies responding to a call of several shots fired in the area gave chase, said sheriff's Deputy Oscar Butao.
The deputies stopped their car, got out of it and shouted orders at Alarcon. He ignored their orders, withdrew a handgun from his waistband and then turned and pointed the gun at the deputies, Butao said.
Fearing for their safety, the two deputies fired several rounds, shooting Alarcon in the chest, Butao said, adding that Alarcon died there.
Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the coroner's office released Alarcon's name, and said he was a resident of East Los Angeles.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, according to Butao.
The deputies were not injured.
