A search for stolen car with two young children inside ended Tuesday after someone found the vehicle abandoned on a street south of Los Angeles, authorities said.
The person, who heard an Amber alert issued for the children, recognized the Scion parked on a Compton street about three hours after the vehicle was stolen outside a Norwalk dry cleaner while the children's father was picking up clothes, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. David Infante said.
The 2-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy were apparently unharmed but distraught after being driven at least seven miles with the suspect, Infante said.
No suspect has been found, he said.
The children's father told investigators he left his children in the car and the engine running when he hopped out to run the errand, authorities said. When he returned about two minutes later, the vehicle was gone.
Capt. Patrick Maxwell said investigators believed the suspect seized the opportunity to steal the vehicle, and was not trying to kidnap the children.
The car's windows were tinted, "and there's a good chance he didn't even know kids were in the car," Maxwell said.
