H.S. Football Player, 15, Dies During Practice

IRVINE An autopsy on the body of a 15-year-old Northwood High School football player who died during practice was inconclusive on Thursday, and further tissue studies will be needed to determine the cause of death, police said.

Dylan Bradshaw, a defensive lineman, collapsed during practice shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the school at 4515 Portola Parkway, and a sports trainer in attendance began CPR, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital, Irvine police Lt. Rick Handfield said.

An autopsy failed to pinpoint a cause of death, and authorities "are waiting for more scientific tissue studies" to find out what happened, Handfield said.

Those studies could take three to six weeks, the lieutenant said.

Handfield said he could not confirm reports that Dylan had an asthma
attack. A school official could not be immediately reached for comment. Handfield said Dylan felt ill and was helped to the sidelines, where he initially sat on an electric cart.

Grief counselors were at the school today to help students, staff and the community deal with the event, Handfield said.

Last August, 16-year-old Kenny Wilson died after collapsing at Beckman High School in Irvine during football practice.

Unlike Dylan, Kenny was wearing full pads and a helmet, and he suffered a heat stroke. Handfield said.

Last September, Megan Myers, 14, of Dana Point, collapsed while running a 3-mile cross-country race. Heart inflammation was later cited as the cause of death of the Dana Hills High School student.
