Officials said a metal container storing ammunition has caught fire in Los Angeles, causing an explosion that sent bullets flying, burned two sheds to the ground and forced the evacuation of nearby homes.
Fire Department spokeswoman d'Lisa Davies said the container blaze erupted Sunday morning in a residential neighborhood in the Reseda area of the San Fernando Valley.
Firefighters battled the fire from 50 feet away and rounds could be heard going off inside.
Davies said five nearby homes were evacuated and two outbuildings burned.
The container's owner was helping officials in their ongoing investigation. Police say he had the proper permits for the ammo.
It was not immediately known why he had the cache.
