BURBANK, Calif. (CBS) ― Nicole Richie was arrested Monday for DUI after allegedly going the wrong way on the Ventura (134) Freeway in Burbank and then
stopping in the carpool lane, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Richie was taken into custody about 1:45 a.m. after a field-sobriety test indicated "she was unable to safely operate a vehicle," said CHP Officer Todd Workman of the Altadena Area office.

Richie told officers she had taken the painkiller Vicodin and smoked marijuana, Workman said. She was booked shortly before 5 a.m. at the CHP Glendale-Verdugo Hills Station for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The 25-year-old reality TV star was transferred to the Glendale city jail, from which she was released at 7:17 a.m. after posting $15,000 bail on the misdemeanor, according to the sheriff's department.

Workman said the CHP had received 911 calls reporting that Richie's black 2005 Mercedes-Benz SUV was heading east in the westbound lanes of the 134 Freeway.

Officers went to the westbound 134 Freeway and found the SUV was facing west but was stopped in the carpool lane near Buena Vista Street, Workman said.

Richie, who is singer Lionel Richie's daughter, allegedly was on her cell phone as officers approached, according to celebrity-news Web site TMZ.com, which first reported the arrest. According to TMZ, a preliminary alcohol screening device indicated that she was not under the influence of alcohol.
