The completion of a $167 million freeway widening project on the 405 freeway is expected to ease the commute for drivers on Los Angeles' west side.
Caltrans workers Saturday took out barricades on the southbound 405 freeway's carpool lanes from the Interstate 10 Freeway interchange south to the 90 Freeway.
Asphalt surface next to the center divider was replaced with concrete.
The northbound side's carpool lanes will open later this month, according to Caltrans Spokeswoman Judy Gish.
The project, which took five years to complete, adds carpool lanes and exit lanes on the freeway.
The five main traffic lanes in both directions were widened between ten to twelve feet.
