Navy Sued Over Underwater Sonar Training

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The Navy faces two lawsuits over its decision to proceed with underwater sonar training exercises off California without precautions they say are necessary to protect whales and other marine life.

A lawsuit by the California Coastal Commission alleges that the Navy's refusal to agree to restrictions it wants to impose will "lead to serious impacts on California's coastal resources."

The commission contends it has the power to limit the Navy's training exercises to make sure it complies with a state law that protects coastal and marine resources.

A separate lawsuit was filed by a coalition of environmental groups led by the Santa Monica-based Natural Resources Defense Council.

It faults the Navy for failing to prepare an environmental impact report on the planned drills.
