A man and woman Wednesday pleaded not guilty in the slaying of an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection employee during an attempted robbery.
Mylus Mondy was attacked around 11:30 p.m. March 9 as he arrived at an ATM in the 6600 block of La Cienega in Los Angeles.
The accused gunman, McKenzie Carl Bryant, 23, and co-defendant Enjoli Elan McClendon, 22, will remain jailed without bail.
The two are due back at the downtown courthouse on June 19.
Mondy, 48, walked up to the ATM, unaware that a robbery was in progress, and was hit on the head, ordered to turn over his money and had a gun pointed at him, according to Los Angeles police.
He was shot as he tried to run away. He died the next day.
The murder charge includes the special circumstance allegation that Mondy was killed in the attempted commission of a robbery. Prosecutors will decide whether to seek the death penalty as the case draws closer to trial.
McClendon and Bryant also are charged with one count each of attempted first-degree robbery of an ATM involving the attack on Mondy, and first-degree ATM robbery involving another alleged victim the same day.
