Texas Man To Be Tried In 1976 Baldwin Park Murder

POMONA, Calif. (AP) ― A Texas man will face a charge of murdering a man in a Los Angeles suburb nearly 33 years ago.

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ordered 64-year-old Carmen Garcia to stand trial after a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Pomona.

Prosecutors allege that Garcia shot 34-year-old Roberto Lozano after they left a Baldwin Park bar together in a car in September 1976.

A convicted felon testified under immunity that he followed the men in a getaway car, saw Garcia toss the gun away after the shooting and then drove him to the Mexican border. Investigators arrested Garcia in May when he tried to buy a handgun from a Laredo, Texas, pawn shop.

Garcia's arraignment is scheduled for July 21. His bail is set at $1 million.
