A mountain lion that was tranquilized after wandering into a backyard will be released back into the wild.
Authorities said the young cougar wandered into a San Juan Capistrano home Monday. Homeowner Jo Ann Merrell said she was watering her plants when she saw the animal 25 feet away from her. She said her pet Sheltie, Cody, barked and chased the mountain lion into the bushes and up a tree.
Animal control officers came to Merrell's house and shot a tranquilizer dart at the mountain lion and brought it down the tree.
They plan to return it to the wild after it wakes up.
