Mountain Lion Puts Woodland Hills On Alert

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. A 175-pound mountain lion was spotted by a security guard patrolling a Woodland Hills neighborhood early Tuesday night, prompting police helicopters and ground units to search the area for about an hour Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

The giant cat, however, was never found.

Sgt. Nathan Banry of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Station said that a Bel Air Patrol security guard told police that he saw the mountain lion skulking through a residential area in the 4900 block of Queen Florence Lane near Deodar Lane around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday night.

Police were sent to the location in search of the animal in addition to two police helicopters -- one with thermal detection capability, Banry said.

The search was called off after about an hour, he said.
