An investigation was under way Monday into a fire that killed two deaf women in a mobile home in Moreno Valley.
A third occupant, Alex Valencia, the husband of one of the dead women, escaped but reportedly suffered burns to his feet. Fire officials described his injuries as moderate.
The fire at Sky Trails Mobile Home Park at 14890 Perris Blvd., near Cactus Avenue, was reported at 5:23 a.m. Sunday, Silvio Lanzas of the Riverside County Fire Department said.
The blaze was started by a candle and caused about $100,000 in damage to the mobile home and two nearby sheds, Lanzas said.
Killed in the blaze was Valencia's 21-year-old wife, Ruby, and a female friend whose name was not immediately released.
Neighbors helpedĀ put out the fire with garden hoses, but the flames were too intense, according to broadcast reports.
A neighbor, Mary Smith, told the Press-Enterprise that the Valencias were recently married. She said they had a cat and several Chihuahuas, which also perished in the blaze.
