Authorities say a 3-year-old girl was killed Saturday and her father critically injured when their pickup truck crashed into a larger truck in Mission Hills.
The Ford pickup, driven by 50-year-old Mariana Ruiz of Bakersfield, was traveling south on the Golden State (5) Freeway around 9:30 a.m. when it hit a truck that was also traveling south, just south of San Fernando Mission Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos said.
The pickup careened off the larger vehicle and struck a light pole, he said.
Ruiz suffered minor injuries, Juan Torres, 43, of Bakersfield, who was in the passenger seat, was critically injured, Villalobos said. Torres suffered a possible concussion and fractured arm and also complained of chest pain.
The couple's daughter was also in the vehicle. All three were taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where the girl was pronounced dead.
The girl "was secured in a car seat," said Villalobos. "Of course that will be a major part of the analysis."
Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
