2 Missing Hikers Found Near Palm Springs Tramway

PALM SPRINGS Those two missing female hikers, lost near the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway since early Saturday evening, have been found safe and sound, according to authorities.

"They seem to be in good health," said sheriff's Investigator Juan Zamora, who talked with search-and-rescue supervisors throughout the day. "They are on their way out now. They're walking to the tram, or coming down the tram to their cars."

The hikers, reportedly ages 45 and 51, had been equipped for the cold but they had no food or water, according to a Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit
spokeswoman who helped organize the search.

Early Sunday, volunteers and at least one helicopter crew had intensified their search after one of the women used a cell phone to contact a relative this morning, Zamora said.

Information about their location was relayed to a search-and-rescue just party before 9:30 a.m., according to Zamora.

"The women said they're okay, and they gave a location," Zamora said.

The women were reported missing about 8 p.m. Saturday, Zamora said.

It was not known if the women hiked into the mountains, or if they began
their trip by riding the tramway up to higher elevations.
