Maria Chavez of El Monte hasn't been seen for five days and detectives theorize the 39-year-old woman has been the victim of foul play.
Detectives Tuesday asked for the public's help in tracking down Chavez and the person or persons who might have done her harm.
Chavez, who worked at an indoor swap meet, was last seen about 8:45 p.m. May 7 leaving her workplace in the 4700 block of Whittier Boulevard, said sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Cochran.
"Foul play is suspected," Cochran stated, without elaborating.
Chavez is Hispanic, about 5 feet 8 inches and 160 pounds, with curly black hair and wears eyeglasses. She was wearing a black pullover shirt with a logo on the front, and dark-colored jeans.
It was unclear why detectives suspect foul play, but sheriff's Sgt. Diane Hecht said Chavez disappeared under suspicious circumstances.
Chavez was driving a 1998 four-door Honda Accord, gray or champagne in
color, license number 5HPL503.
Anyone knowing her whereabouts was urged to call Cochran at (323) 890-5635; or Detective S. Blagg, (323) 890-5584.
