Jury Deliberating In Sheriff Corruption Case

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Jurors have begun deliberations in the trial of a former Southern California sheriff accused of accepting tens of thousands of dollars in bribes and kickbacks in exchange for the power of his office.

The deliberations began Thursday in the corruption trial of Michael Carona. The former Orange County sheriff has pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy, three counts of mail fraud and two counts of witness tampering.

Carona was indicted by a grand jury in October 2007 and retired from his post three months later.

Carona's lawyer said a co-conspirator was the one who collected bribes and kickbacks.

Carona faces up to 85 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
