Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona has directed his staff to come up with a plan that would provide for his stepping aside from the day-to-day operations of the department while he faces corruption charges in a federal grand jury indictment.
Orange County Supervisor Bill Campbell, who was prepared to submit a non-binding resolution at Tuesday's board meeting, calling on Carona to take similar action, says he was informed the sheriff is already taking that step and looking into what specific duties he can pass off to others or must perform himself, such as signing documents.
Also, Supervisor John Moorlach has asked to be placed on Tuesday's agenda a proposed charter amendment that -- if approved by voters -- would allow the board to remove, by a 4/5 vote, any county elected officer, other than another supervisor, for cause defined by certain forms of malfeasance in office.
