O.C. Sheriff Sued Over Alleged Retaliation

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ― Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona is being sued by a member of his department who says he was retaliated against for supporting Carona's opponent in the 2006 election.

Lieutenant Jeff Bardzik claims in the lawsuit that he was turned down for promotions and transferred to a less desirable post after he backed Lieutenant Bill Hunt in the 2006 election.

Bardzik claims in the suit he met with Carona after his name appeared on a list of Hunt supporters and that Carona told him point-blank he should resign, noting that "the Bill Hunt thing didn't help."

He seeks unspecified damages. Hunt had also claimed to be the victim of retaliation after his failed bid to unseat Carona.

The former candidate eventually retired rather take a demotion to patrol deputy.
