Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona will take a 60-day leave of absence as he fights federal corruption charges against him, it was announced Tuesday.
Attorney Michael Schroeder said Carona made the decision Tuesday after meeting with his command staff and the leadership of the county sheriff's deputy union.
Schroeder said the sheriff also sought a second legal opinion after his in-house legal counsel told him it was illegal for an elected official to take a leave of absence.
Schroeder does not know if Carona would be paid during his leave.
Carona Monday pleaded not guilty to a count of conspiracy, four counts of mail fraud and two counts of witness tampering after a federal indictment was unsealed last week.
Prosecutors allege Carona, his wife and his alleged mistress took nearly $700,000 in bribes and kickbacks.
