Sheriff Carona To Keep Salary During Investigation

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ― Orange County must continue to pay Sheriff Michael Carona's salary while he is on a self-imposed leave to fight federal corruption charges.

The Board of Supervisors was told that the state Constitution and Peace Officer Bill of Rights protect Carona's salary.

Carona announced last month that he would take paid leave for 60 days to defend himself. He has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, witness tampering and mail fraud. Undersheriff Jo Ann Galisky is running the department.

Federal prosecutors contend that the sheriff and others conspired to get him elected in 1998 so Carona could use the office to enrich them with bribes.

Carona has pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy, four counts of mail fraud and two counts of witness tampering.
