Former Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona was a bright, charismatic leader consumed by greed as his federal corruption trial began in Santa Ana, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
Michael Carona took thousands in cash payments, gifts and illegal loans for himself, his mistress and a close group of friends in exchange for political favors and get-out-jail-free cards, Assistant U.S. Attorney Brett Sagel said.
Opening statements got under way Wednesday for the square-jawed, three-term sheriff charged with conspiracy, mail fraud and witness tampering. Carona has vigorously denied the charges.
His alleged mistress and his wife have pleaded not guilty to related charges.
Carona was once dubbed "America's sheriff" by CNN's Larry King after the lawman vowed to catch a child abductor.
Carona was charged in the corruption case after one of his assistants became an undercover informant.
