A federal magistrate entered a not guilty plea Monday on behalf of Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona in a corruption case accusing him and others of pocketing nearly $700,000 in bribes and kickbacks.
The magistrate also entered not guilty pleas for Carona's wife, Deborah, and his alleged mistress, attorney Debra Victoria Hoffman.
All three defendants were present for their arraignment in a Santa Ana federal court.
A hearing was set for Dec. 18 before a trial judge.
The 52-year-old sheriff is charged with conspiracy, mail fraud and witness tampering, and could face up to 105 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
Prosecutors allege the head of the nation's fifth-largest sheriff's department conspired to enrich himself and others by trading cash and gifts for political favors.
Carona has denied the allegations and said he will be vindicated at trial.
