Metrolink Derailment Jurors Ask For Site Visits
LOS ANGELES (AP) ―
Jurors deciding the fate of a man accused of causing a train derailment that killed 11 people have asked to visit several sites outside the Los Angeles courtroom.
The request came during the second day of deliberations in the trial of Juan Alvarez. Alvarez drove his SUV onto the tracks in suburban Glendale on January 26, 2005, causing a disaster in which a Metrolink train derailed and smashed into another commuter train.
Attorneys from both sides are expected tomorrow to discuss the request to visit the five sites. Court officials did not know which sites the panel asked to visit.
Alvarez has admitted responsibility for the derailment but claims he was only trying to kill himself.
He has pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of murder, train wrecking and arson.
