Subcontractor Cooperating In Metrolink Probe

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The subcontractor responsible for operating the Metrolink commuter train that smashed into a freight train in Los Angeles says the company is "cooperating fully" with investigators.

A Metrolink spokeswoman says that a preliminary investigation Saturday shows an engineer employed by Veolia Transportation who was driving the train failed to stop at a red signal, causing a collision that killed at least 23 people.

A spokeswoman for Veolia Transportation told The Associated Press in a statement that the Illinois-based firm is deeply saddened by the incident and is cooperating fully with investigators to find the cause.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators have been assessing the scene of Friday afternoon's wreck.

Veolia is a major private operator of passenger rail transportation in the United States, including services in Boston, Miami and San Diego County.

Veolia Transportation later released this statement:

We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Our deepest sympathies go out to everyone who has been affected by this tragedy. Connex Railroad is contributing every available resource to support rescue and recovery efforts. We are cooperating fully with NTSB as they delve into the cause of this accident. Any additional inquiries concerning the incident and the investigation should be directed to the NTSB, with whom we are cooperating fully.
