O.C. Jail May Release Inmates Before Memorial Day

SANTA ANA (AP) ― The Orange County Sheriff's Department wants to release sentenced inmates early in anticipation of a spike in Memorial Day weekend arrests.

In seeking an emergency court order, Assistant Sheriff Charles Walters said there's concern arrests during the three-day holiday could put Orange County jails over the acceptable inmate capacity and endanger inmates.

Orange County jails, which have a rated capacity of 5,075 inmates, now hold 6,307 prisoners.

Senior Deputy County Counsel Wendy Phillips said a Thursday afternoon Superior Court hearing has been requested.

Superior Court Judge Thomas Borris denied a similar request earlier this month because prosecutors weren't notified. Phillips said prosecutors have now been advised.
