New Medical School Approved For UC Campus

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― The University of California Board of Regents has approved the establishment of a new medical school at the UC Riverside campus.

It will be the first new public medical school built in California in more than four decades.

The first student class is expected to start in 2012.

The regents approved the plan Thursday at their meeting at UC Santa Barbara.

The medical school is meant to address an expected physician shortfall in Southern California.

Construction costs will amount to about $550 million by the time it's completed in 2021.

It will be paid for by a variety of sources, including state, federal and private funds.

UC will ask the state for an initial investment of $100 million.
