Mayor Takes Responsibility For Breakup Of Marriage

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Monday he was responsible for the break-up of his marriage but declined to answer when asked if he was romantically involved with a woman other than his wife.

A sullen Villaraigosa told reporters "that is a private matter" at a packed news conference at L.A. City Hall.

Villaraigosa added, "While the public has a right to know about this change in our status as a family, I'm not going to entertain questions about our personal, private lives."

The mayor announced last week that he and his wife, Corina, were separating after more than 20 years of marriage.

Villaraigosa will temporarily move back to his Mount Washington home.

His wife and their two teenage children remain at Getty House, the city's official mayoral residence.
