Hundreds of immigration-reform advocates have gathered for demonstrations in downtown Los Angeles.
The protests come one year after peaceful marches on the issue ended violently when police officers used batons and fired so-called non-lethal rounds to clear people out of a park during the day's closing rally.
An electronic sign on a new police vehicle at one march meeting point says "WELCOME TO THE MARCH." It's part of a new system called Phraselator for communicating with crowds in several languages.
Police officials admitted significant command failures last year and retrained officers in crowd control.
At an earlier press conference, L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa renewed his criticism of federal immigration authorities for work-site raids that he said could unsettle the local economy.
The fashion industry, restaurants and furniture-makers are widely believed to rely on a high number of illegal workers.
