LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Los Angeles County supervisors have taken initial steps to find a private company to take control of Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital.

Federal regulators last week announced they will cut off $200 million in funding from King-Harbor after it failed repeated inspections, a decision that forced the hospital to all but shut down.

The emergency room closed Friday and patients will be moved to other hospitals within two weeks.

The board voted unanimously Monday to assemble a negotiating team to locate a new operator to run the hospital.

Area politicians and residents say lives could be lost as ill or injured people are forced to travel further from home to receive care. Others fear hospitals elsewhere in the region could be swamped with patients they can't handle.
