As California looks to lift the state's ban on gay marriage, West Hollywood city officials and gay-rights groups will hold a community meeting Thursday night to offer same-sex couples with information on how to tie the knot.
The "All About Marriage" town hall-style meeting will offer information on the latest legal maneuvers surrounding the gay marriage issue -- including the upcoming November ballot measure that would reinstate the ban and the state Supreme Court's refusal to block same-sex marriages in the interim.
In 2000, 61.4 percent of voting Californians approved Proposition 22, which stated that only a marriage between a man and a woman is sanctioned by the state. Gay couples denied marriage licenses in Beverly Hills, San Francisco and other areas then sued.
In May, the state's high court ruled last month that the proposition was unconstitutional by a 4-3 vote because it discriminated against homosexuals and did not provide them with equal protection under the law.
On Tuesday, the state will lift the same-sex marriage ban.
West Hollywood city officials said they will start issuing marriage licenses at 9 a.m. and schedule appointments for civil ceremonies. The licenses will be issued at the West Hollywood Park auditorium, 647 N. San Vicente Blvd.
Meanwhile, Thursday's meeting will be give "up-to-the-minute practical information for couples who are considering getting married this year -- a 'how-to' for the 'I do,"' city officials said.
Among those expected to take part in the meeting are West Hollywood Councilman John Duran, Lambda Legal senior counsel Jenny Pizer and representatives from the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, Equality California and the Los Angeles County clerk's office.
The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's Renberg Theatre at the Village at Ed Gould Plaza, 1125 N. McCadden Place.
The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's Office will begin accepting online marriage license applications on Tuesday. People who apply online can then visit any of the clerk's satellite offices to pay for and pick up the license and arrange for a civil ceremony. The online application site is at
