Man, 31, Drowns Swimming Off Catalina

AVALON Police say a 31-year-old man swimming off Santa Catalina Island drowned Saturday afternoon.

The drowning was reported about 3:30.

The unidentified male was swimming off a boat, along the cliffs known as the palisades on the southwest- facing side of the island, according to Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. John Hudson of Avalon Station.

The man was swimming in about 30 feet of water and did not surface, he said.

CBS2 reported the man had been snorkeling when he got tangled up in kelp.

Lifeguards found his body about an hour later, Hudson said.
