Offshore winds and dry conditions returned to the Southland Wednesday, which prompted fire crews to go on high alert and the National Weather Service Fire to issue a "red flag" warning indicating a heightened risk of wildfires.
The NWS announced that a Red Flag warning -- indicating a heightened risk of wildfires -- is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Los Angeles County mountains and coastal areas, along with the Santa Clarita Valley.
The Weather Service predicted bone-dry conditions and wind gusts of up to 50 mph.
Winds out of the north and northeast are expected to pick up overnight and the relative humidity may drop below 10 percent at times, according to the NWS.
"Northeast winds will likely strengthen to over 25 mph with gusts to 50 mph centered over eastern Ventura and western Los Angeles County," according to the NWS.
Wednesday should be mostly sunny with highs across the region mostly in the 70s.
A Red Flag warning signifies high fire danger due to a combination of strong winds and low humidity.
