Man Gets 9 Years For Machete Fight Over Beer
REDDING, Calif. (AP) ―
A 61-year-old Redding man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for attacking his friend with a machete during a fight over a case of beer.
James Smidt was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury to 57-year-old Randall Jackson in the February attack. A Shasta County jury acquitted him of attempted murder.
Smidt was accused of attacking Jackson when he refused to share his beer. Jackson suffered gashes to his neck, arm, head and face.
Smidt was sentenced Friday and will have to serve about 7 1/2 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
