Gang Member Shoots Boy, 16, For Refusing Challenge
LYNWOOD
A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed on the porch of a Lynwood residence when he failed to respond to a gang challenge -- the Southland's second such slaying since Saturday, authorities said Friday.
The shooting occurred in the 2900 block of Poplar Drive near Bellinger Street around 11:45 p.m. Thursday, Deputy Rick Pedroza of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.
Raymond Frias was sitting down on the front porch at the location visiting a female friend when an unknown male walked up and stated, " `Where are you from?'," Pedroza said.
Frias did not respond, and without provocation, the assailant fired one round from a handgun, striking the victim once in the upper body, he said, adding that the girl was not hurt. The shooter fled in an unknown direction, he said.
Frias was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Pedroza said.
Anyone with information on the shooting was urged to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
A 16-year-old boy was killed under similar circumstances in North Hollywood on Saturday night. Edward Satterstrom of Sun Valley was walking with a friend in the 8200 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard near Roscoe Boulevard, and was shot multiple times in the chest after failing to respond to a gang challenge, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
On Monday police identified the suspected assailant as David Aranda Hernandez, 18, a documented Pacoima-area gang member who is being sought.
