The parents of a 2-year-old Pomona girl who died earlier this year of malnutrition were in custody Thursday on suspicion of murder.
Lupe Lopez, 28, and Gabriel Garcia, 27, were arrested Wednesday and charged in the death of Isabelle Garcia, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office told the Los Angeles Times.
A sibling found the toddler unresponsive in her bed at their home in a trailer park in the 200 block of South Huntington Street two months ago, The Times reported.
The primary cause of death was determined to be malnutrition, authorities said. Isabelle weighed just 19 pounds at the time of her death, according to The Times.
Lopez was initially arrested two days after her daughter's death, but was later released. However, the couple's five children were removed from the home.
They had also been placed in foster care in March 2006, days after Isabelle's birth, because of suspected neglect and concerns about her father's alleged drug abuse, an official familiar with the case told The Times.
But when their foster mother had to return to Mexico, the children were returned to their parents, law enforcement officials told the newspaper.
Lopez and Garcia were expected to be arraigned Friday.
