Lung Disease Makes A Comeback In East Bay

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) ― Contra Costa County health officials are concerned that a Richmond health center is the source of a rare bacterial infection.

A nurse was recently diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease, a potentially deadly infection that can cause pneumonia. The nurse believes she may have been infected from water dripping from the ceiling.

Health officials say air tests came back negative and water quality test results are pending.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 8,000 and 18,000 people are hospitalized with Legionnaires' disease each year.

The disease was named Legionnaires' after members of the American Legion came down with a respiratory illness during a 1976 convention.
