A union official says thousands of teachers in the nation's second-largest school district plan to stage a one-hour job action in protest of state funding cuts even if a court forbids it.
Joshua Pechthalt, vice president of United Teachers Los Angeles, told a news conference today he expects more than 30,000 teachers to report to work an hour late tomorrow to protest a $353 million cut in state funding for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The district has asked a Superior Court judge for a temporary restraining order against the action.
Earlier this week, the state Public Employee Relations Board denied the district's request that the board seek an injunction against the union.
Teachers are planning to spend the first hour of school on picket lines Friday. The union says teachers will not be paid for that hour.
The 710-square-mile district has more than 694,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
