Overcrowding Forces Early Release For Many Inmates
LOS ANGELES (AP) ―
About 1 in 10 inmates released early from Los Angeles County jails went on to be arrested for new crimes during the time they would have served.
Those are the results of an L.A. Times investigation released Sunday.
The newspaper reports that in the past four years nearly 16,000 inmates released without serving their full sentences were re-arrested.
More than a fourth of those were charged with violent or life-endangering crimes, and 16 were charged with murder.
Some inmates were freed early despite orders from judges that they serve their full terms.
