SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ― Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton says his department is still investigating why officers fired rubber bullets and swung batons to disperse a crowd at an immigration rally in May.

Bratton spoke with journalists in San Jose Friday at the annual convention of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

The police chief didn't offer excuses for the officers' behavior but said the LAPD could learn from the incident.

During the emotional panel discussion with Bratton, a journalist recalled how an officer beat her with a baton until she collapsed when she was covering the May 1 demonstration in Los Angeles.
