A proposed $5 to $7 billion modernization of Los Angeles International Airport includes 32 additional airline gates, including some that would accommodate newer superjumbo jetliners.
Plans call for a dramatic remodeling of the Tom Bradley International Terminal and a new Midfield Satellite Concourse.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says it's a milestone in restoring LAX as an international gateway for air travel.
Remodeling the Bradley terminal and building six new aircraft gates capable of handling the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is expected to be completed in mid-2013.
A passenger processing center, several taxiways and a people mover tram are also planned.
