L.A. Fire Chief To Retire After Nearly 21 Years

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department plans to retire in March after nearly 21 years as chief.

Michael Freeman sent a letter to the county Board of Supervisors Tuesday announcing his retirement.

Freeman praised his colleagues in the department in the letter, calling them unselfish, caring and courageous.

Freeman was hired by the Board of Supervisors in 1989 to serve as the eighth fire chief in the history of the Department.

Only one other chief has served the department longer. Spence Turner was chief for 27 years beginning in 1925.
