Anticipating a $100 million deficit in the city budget, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is asking city departments to submit reduced budgets for the second half of this fiscal year.
Villaraigosa on Friday told police, fire and emergency management departments to trim their budgets by 1 percent and all other departments to make cuts of 3 percent.
The mayor also asked managers to consider reducing and streamlining the city's work force, because he says 80 percent of the city's costs are linked to salaries and benefits.
The city's revised budget projects a $55 million revenue shortfall, which is likely to grow in the current economic crisis.
It does not include anticipated cuts to state funding because of the $11 billion state budget deficit.
