A woman was struck and killed Tuesday by a Long Beach police car as she was trying to cross a street, authorities said.
An officer was driving east on Ocean Boulevard about 6:30 a.m. when his patrol car hit the 44-year-old woman, who had walked into the roadway near 36th Place, according to Long Beach police Sgt. David Cannan.
The officer was not on an emergency call, and was not driving with the flashing lights or siren activated, Cannan said.
"This pedestrian was not in a crosswalk, (and) crossed from north to south across Ocean Boulevard," Long Beach police Officer Juan Gomez said.
Authorities withheld the name of the woman, who died at the scene, pending notification of her relatives.
The officer, whose name was not immediately released, was uninjured, Cannan said. The officer is reportedly a 27-year veteran of the force.
Ocean Boulevard was closed in the area while an investigation was conducted.
