A boy and a girl on their way to different elementary schools in Long Beach both eluded kidnapping attempts Wednesday, and police say the attempts appear to be unrelated.
The first attempt was made on a 9-year-old boy on his way to International Elementary School, 700 Locust Ave., at about 7:30 a.m. He was approached by a man in a light blue pickup truck, who gestured for the boy to get in. The boy ignored him, ran onto campus and told school officials, police said.
The second attempt was made a half-hour later, when someone tried to grab an 8-year-old girl in a stairwell at Edison Elementary School, 625 Maine Ave. The girl ran off, police said.
In the International Elementary incident, the suspect was described a clean-shaven, dark-skinned Latino in his 40s with white and black curly hair, wearing a light blue shirt and missing his front teeth, Long Beach police Sgt. Dina Zapalski said.
In the Edison Elementary attempt, the suspect was described as a white man with white hair, wearing a white shirt and jeans who "needed a shave."
"What we do know is that they were different suspects, not the same person," Zapalski said.
"We also need the public's help ... we need a little more information at this time," she said.
