Same-Sex Couples Get Ready To Tie The Knot

WEST HOLLYWOOD (AP) ― Two hours before a scheduled 9 a.m. opening, about 30 couples were lined up to get marriage licenses at an auditorium at West Hollywood Park.

The first couple in line, Kate and Tori Kuykendall, both 31, have been together five years. They arrived at 6 p.m. Monday, not expecting they were going to be able to stay. The word had gone out earlier here would be no camping out allowed.

The second couple, 40-year-old Jay Mendes and 22-year-old Bantha Sao, have been together three years. Mendes says the two are hoping to be the first male couple in the city of West Hollywood to get married.

A Beverly Hills bakery is handing out 600 vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with male and female symbols.

A white archway is being set up outside the auditorium, with white and purple flowers.
