Deputy Fatally Shoots Alleged Drug Dealer

LENNOX, Calif. A Los Angeles County deputy shot and killed an alleged drug dealer in the unincorporated Lennox area when he thought the man was about to produce a weapon, authorities said Thursday.

The shooting in the 11000 block of Dalerose Avenue near West 111th Street took place around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sgt. Diane Hecht of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.

Christian Portillo, 35, died at the scene, sDeputy Denise Fuchs said. No deputies were hurt.

Deputies were patrolling in the neighborhood "when they spotted a known narcotics dealer," Fuchs said in a statement.

"Lennox deputies had been alerted that this drug dealer was actively selling drugs on local streets," Fuchs said.

"The deputies approached the suspect as he sat in his vehicle in a driveway," she said. "When the suspect noticed the deputies, he became startled and quickly reached under his seat.

"Fearing the suspect was arming himself, one deputy fired from his duty weapon, striking the suspect in the upper torso," Fuchs said. No weapon was found.
