Laura Richardson Sworn In As Congresswoman
WASHINGTON (AP) ―
Laura Richardson of Long Beach, California, has been sworn into the House of Representatives as the newest member of Congress.
The former California assemblywoman replaces Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, who died of cancer in April after serving seven terms in Congress.
She took the oath of office from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco. Richardson said: "I respectfully stand today on her legacy as I reach toward my own destiny."
Richardson, a one-time field worker for Millender-McDonald, won a special election in August to represent the heavily Democratic 37th Congressional District, which includes Long Beach, Carson and Compton.
