The backyard of a Westwood home collapsed in a landslide Thursday, sending tons of mud down onto Sepulveda Boulevard and knocking out electrical service to more than 1,800 customers, authorities said.
Firefighters were sent to the 300 block of Thurston Avenue about 7:10 a.m. in response to a report of "flooding," Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
No one was injured in the landslide, which dumped mud and vegetation onto Sepulveda Boulevard. The road was closed between Sunset Boulevard and Montana Avenue for most of Thursday but was reopened that evening.
Investigators were trying to determine why the hillside was saturated with water, Humphrey said.
Three power lines were knocked down, interrupting electrical service to
1,819 residential customers in Brentwood and Bel Air Estates and to 10
industrial customers, including the Getty Center, according to Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokesman Joe Ramallo.
By 8:40 a.m., power had been restored to all 10 commercial/industrial
customers, but service was still interrupted to the residential customers,
Ramallo said.
Some homes were evacuated while inspectors worked to determine if the area was safe.
The home appeared to be threatened because it sits just 15 feet from the edge of the landslide.
