A teenager accused of driving without a license lost control of an SUV that crashed Thursday in Laguna Niguel, killing a 26-year-old soldier, a sheriff's spokesman said.
The 1994 Lexus SUV was likely traveling at more than 100 mph when it crashed around 2 a.m. near Camino del Avion and Niguel Road, according to Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Alcohol also appeared to be a factor in the deadly crash, authorities said.
The soldier, who had been stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., and was on leave visiting a friend in Laguna Niguel, was ejected from the front passenger seat and died at the scene, he said.
The driver, a 15-year-old from San Juan Capistrano, survived the crash was expected to be charged with vehicular manslaughter, according to Amormino.
The two were apparently on their way to buy more alcohol when the crash occurred, he said.
Anyone who witnessed the crash was urged to contact the Sheriff's Department at 1-866-TIP-OCSD.
